Adel Tanury

Dear friends in Christ,
It was the will of our Beloved Jesus Christ, and of the Blessed Virgin, Mother of the Eucharist, that I would come to know many priests in Cali and other cities of Colombia. They are all quite different in character and in the manner the Lord called them. I regard them as my friends and, by God’s grace, I can say I know their ways of thinking and leading their lives.
I know therefore how lonely their lives can be and this particular point always worries me. It is so often that this loneliness becomes scary and menacing, for here we are speaking of human beings who surrendered their everything in order to serve God and his people.
It is so regretful that many among us are prompt to criticism and slow to offer support and give a hand to our brothers, our priests, when they are going through dark or difficult periods in their lives. We have forgotten that they are most loved by God and by the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. We also tend to forget that the devil is powerful too—not more powerful than God though—and attacks ferociously with all cruelty the mind and flesh of our priests.
And what do we do? Nothing! Nothing at all! Most of the time our one reaction is to criticize them, and to criticize the Church, oblivious of the fact that in doing so we are not going against the priest or the Church as such, but against our Beloved Jesus. What a shame!
I excruciatingly suffer on account of the recent scandals, and I suffer even more because I am doing nothing for these men who badly need mercy, bounty and the respect of all. Nevertheless, through our true friendship towards them and through fervent prayer, God and Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, will grant protection to them and will provide every help they need in their times of trial—which they have like everybody else.
I believe that we must gather together and wrap our priests up with far more affection, understanding and brotherly attention to their personal needs, so that we are also in a position to help them see what they have to see, and also to remind them of the dignity of their position, and the great gift of the priesthood that has been bestowed on them.
We too have to be reminded that we need holy priests, for without priests there is no eucharist, and without the Eucharist we no longer have the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, and without Jesus on the altar we are just dead in life. I am afraid this latter disaster is exactly what the devil intends when stirring up chaos and confusion within the Catholic Church.
Lord God, help us to understand what lies beyond our understanding. Lord God, do not allow the devil to make profit of this time of scandal in order to destroy or diminish trust and love towards those human beings we call our priests. And also, Lord God, do touch every priest at his heart so that he commits more fully in loving You and being faithful to You always and everywhere.
With all due respect and kind affection,
Adel Tanury,
